  garden sonic acoustic guitar

This guitar was for a customer who wanted an 8 string hollow body guitar. He had ordered a couple guitars previous to this one. The inlay was inspired from him telling me he wanted it to be "good vs. evil" so I thought about it for a long while and this inlay is what came to my mind; then into being.

The inlays are depictions from the book of Revelation in the bible – the ultimate good vs. evil story. The good side I wanted on the front of the guitar and on the headstock and the "bad," I decided to use the back of the guitar for that part of the inlay.

Starting on the tailpiece you see John, on the island of Patmos, getting his vision from God. He sees through an open door into Heaven, so I put the open door on the rear humbucker. This door is also representing the door of your heart where He says, in chapter 3, "I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with Me." Chapter 4 and 5 goes on to reveal what he sees through this "open door into Heaven". In chapter 5, He talks about the Lion of the Tribe of Judah – the Root of David and a Lamb so I put this on the front humbucker. John, in the Spirit, weeps - because "no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it".

The only one worthy to open the scroll was the Lamb, the Son of God, Jesus. I represent the scroll He is opening on my inlay as the overall time line of history. And in my inlay the four horsemen of the apocalypse are "coming off the scroll"; towards the headstock the names (in the book of life) are on the scroll. In all truth, according to scripture, the book of life and the scrolls are different, but I can't inlay the whole book of Revelation so I was bringing together the concepts to show overall, that "God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end" – He unrolled the scrolls of time and He is going to roll them up. John goes on to tell us that "the only one found worthy to open the scroll was The Lamb that was slain" - Christ. So at the highest frets, you can see this Man of Salvation unrolling the scroll. The seven stars are the seven Spirits of God. The scroll you'll see in the inlay goes out of the picture "frame" of the fingerboard and reappears again here and there. On the scroll I have engraved various themes pertinent to the Gospel of Christ, the open tomb, the Lamb of God, the Crucifixion, and Christ the redeemer of all man kind.

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in Heaven for about half an hour. And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. I made the trumpets from actual brass, since that is what they are made of in reality.

John says in Revelation 19:11, "I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. His eyes are like blazing fire…He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is Word of God. Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty."

This is how the Lord will return - as a Lion, and the kings of the earth will stand in awe of Him. Scripture says he will put all his enemies "under his foot". So I put earthly kings falling into submission at His return on the first couple frets.

The headstock art concludes by showing Christ, with streams of LIVING WATER flowing from Him, rolling up the "scroll of time". Revelation concludes like this, "The angel showed me the river of the water of Life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb…Behold I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha the Omega, the First and the last, The Beginning and the End". The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of Life. He who testifies to these things says "Yes, I am coming soon."

Amen, Come, Lord Jesus. The Grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen.

While I was working on the headstock, the owner told me he wanted me to put his name, his wife's name and is baby daughters name somewhere on the guitar. Up to this point, he had only seen the back of the guitar art, the tailpiece and the two humbucker covers. He hadn't seen ANY of the fingerboard or the headstock art. He had wanted to be surprised with the rest of the inlay when he opened the case for the first time. He had not seen this concept yet, so he knew nothing of the scroll or the headstock stuff. And then I decided since Christ is on the headstock "rolling up the scrolls of time," that I could engrave their names on the scroll…and on the scroll, the book of Life, I engraved the names of the owner, Regan, his wife and baby daughter. It turned out pretty awesome I feel. I am happy with this inlay.

The top is a nice bear claw sitka spruce top with a lot of chatoyance. The back and sides are Ziricote, which is a really beautiful wood. The fingerboard is Macassar ebony with gold frets. All the pieces in the inlay are various woods, stone, pearl and other materials. I never did count the pieces in the inlay – it doesn't really matter to me. I just want to tell the story through the art of inlay.

For some, the number of pieces matters. Not to me. If the story is told with four pieces and it looks good, then the task has been complete. Also, in my style of inlay, to tell these stories I find I am not using mother of pearl that much. It doesn't "have" to be mother of pearl, or it doesn't "have" to be all abalone. I guess I am just trying to use what I think looks good and represents the piece I'm trying to make. Quite frankly, to me, mother of pearl doesn't look anything like skin. So I don't use it for the human look. That's the beauty of art – it's in the hands of its creator.

This guitar was created as a custom build, and it took about a year and a half to make. If you are interested in guitar created in a similar style, please give me a call to discuss your ideas today!
